What is the use of writing a play in response to the war? Well, it allowed me to deal with some of the overwhelming sense of grief and impotence, and it will be performed as part of a fundraiser for Ukraine at UEA where I’m currently studying. It won’t help to stop the war, but it’s the infinitesimally small positive thing I can do at the moment.
I remember fondly my visit to Kyiv four years ago, and I’ve been sustained by conversations with my Russian daughter-in-law Yulia Makarova. I hope that the play honours my love for Yulia, my sorrow for the truth-starved Russian people, and my admiration for the courageous people of Ukraine.
